About Anglo Bengali Inter College
The Anglo Bengali Inter College or ABIC is not just a boy's college in Allahabad but it is a living embodiment of the spirit of the times, intertwined with the great city's and states, fortunes and destinies. Through the decades it has reflected the rich amalgamation of the ethos of ancient Prayag and the intellect of the Bengali Renaissance. From a humble school in 1875 it has grown into a premier intermediate boy�s college of the state. It has produced many eminent alumni who distinguished themselves as outstanding administrators, jurists, scholars, scientists and sportsmen. This has been realized through the devoted service of many generations of teachers and wisdom of those eminent persons who managed the institution. The seed of learning and knowledge planted and nurtured by them, is a mighty tree today.

ABIC was founded in 1875 by shri sital
prasad gupta and pandit biswanath bhattachaya. The
school started functioning in 1875 from the
residence of shri sital prasad gupta(a translator
at allahabad high court)with some ten pupils and
one teacher,shri sita ram bhattacharya. It was
then known as the "BANGLA SCHOOL". A few years
later, english was introduced and after its
affiliation with the Allahabad university in 1889
as "Anglo Bengali high school". Initially, the
school functionedf from various rented buildings
and the present building and campus were
inaugurated in 1899 on 28th Nov. Arthur strachey,
the chief justice of allahabad high court. |
As it was becoming difficult to manage the finances of the institution through donations, public subscription and pupils� fees, the management sought and received government aid in 1913, thus becoming a government aided institution. During this era, the school excelled in academic achievement with students figuring many times in the merit list of the Matriculation Examination. In 1926 another milestone was achieved when recognition was granted by the board to teach arts subjects at the intermediate level. In 1927 shri B.N kar, who was a teacher of Mathematics and science at canning college Lucknow, joined as the principal. He headed the institution for 33 years till 1960. |
He was instrumental in grading the institution by bringing him all the teaching activates under one location, introducing shift system, establishing the college library, introducing games like volleyball and basketball and starting literacy activates like debating society, scout, Red Cross, expedition etc.(In 1939 ABIC had a very distinguished visitor, Netaji subhash chandra bose who addressed the students i.e physics and chemistry in intermediate classes was started and biology in 1950. In 1950, electricity connection was provided. In 1962 vice-principal sri S.C.Bose received the National Award for teachers from the president of India. he was a brilliant scholar of economics. In 1976 the centenary celebrations were held and spread for 4 days in November and 125 years completion celebration was held in 2003. On this occasion on the 23rd of December a commemorative postage stamp was released by the govt. of India. |
